The mission of the Richard P. Welsh Library is to support the teaching and research needs of the faculty, students, and alumni of the NewSchool of Architecture and Design.

The Library may be closed during breaks. Faculty and students will receive notification via email.

Collection

The Richard P. Welsh Library is a well-stocked academic library with a collection of over 17,000 volumes covering all subjects offered at NewSchool. The collection is kept relevant and useful through the acquisition of new titles to support graduate and undergraduate study according to our Collection Development Policy (PDF). The library also offers a reference collection, an excellent selection of periodicals and access to e-resources including databases and ebooks.

 

Access

The library provides services to members of the NewSchool community and is open to the wider academic community and the general public.  All new library users must have an orientation session. Staff may ask to see your Student ID whenever you are in the library, so please keep it safe.

 

Borrowing

NewSchool students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the San Diego Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are automatically granted borrowing rights. Additional borrowing information can be found on our borrowing page.

 

Course Reserves

Faculty members often place course-related material on reserve. Reserve materials are located at the library desk and may be checked out for two hours. To check out reserve material visit the library desk. You can also view our Reserve Policy (PDF).

 

Reference and Instruction

Librarians at NewSchool teach introductory and advanced classes on the critical use and evaluation of academic research resources. Would you like us to come to your class? Visit the faculty resources page to see what topics our librarians can cover. Reference and research assistance is also available in the library for students. Drop in or make an appointment.

 

Learning Outcomes

  • Library users will be able to locate and access resources utilizing appropriate search strategies within the library and beyond.

  • Library users will be able to critically evaluate information sources considering relevance, reliability, and authority.

  • Library users will be able to use information ethically and legally assigning credit for the source and ideas utilizing pertinent citation standards.

  • Library users will be able to apply discipline-specific research methods to accomplish a particular purpose.

The Richard P. Welsh Library is located on the NewSchool of Architecture and Design campus at:

1249 F St, San Diego, CA 92101

Entering from the F Street entrance the library is directly in front of you. NewSchool is a downtown campus, so if you plan to visit we recommend public transportation. There is on-street parking and paid lots in the area.
