Government statistics are really helpful when researching a particular city or locality in the United States. The Federal Government has a large number of fact-finding agencies covering everything from demographics to agriculture. This page includes some of the most relevant.

Resources

Bureau of Economic Analysis
Information on national and international trade, industry and economic indicators. The “U.S. Economy at a glance” highlights the most influential economic indicators.
Bureau of Justice Statistics
BJS collects and publishes statistics on all aspects of criminal justice in the U.S. Crimes by type or victim and court systems are covered.
Bureau of Labor Statistics
Collects information about the U.S. civilian labor force, including unemployment rates, Consumer Price Index, Payroll Employment Rate, and Import and Export Price Indexes.
Bureau of Transportation Statistics
Information about travel and transportation including personal travel, public transportation and freight. Covers air, land, and sea and is available by region and mode of travel.
Census Bureau
Collects information on the population of the United States, including a census completed every ten years. The quick facst and easy stats pages are good places to begin.
Department of Homeland Security
Information on topics related to the security of the U.S. including statistics on immigration, maritime information and statistics from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
Economic Research Service
Collects information on agriculture in the U.S. Food safety and prices, commodity markets and the rural economy are included.
Energy Information Administration
Statistics on fossil fuels, nuclear power and renewable resources. National and international indicators. Also provides information on the side effects of energy use (e.g. emissions and waste)

Information on every aspect of agriculture. Economics, demographics, commodity stocks, crops, livestock, yields, environmental concerns, land use and education are all included.
National Center for Education Statistics
Collects information about all aspects of education in the United States. Statistics are available at district, municipality, state and national levels.
National Centre for Health Statistics
Covers every aspect of health in the U.S. Includes diseases, mortality, exercise, marriage, injury and access to health care, among others.
National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics
Statistical information about science and engineering in the U.S. Includes education in science and engineering, personnel characteristics, research programs, and funding.
Social Security Administration Office of Research Evaluation and Statistics Focuses on U.S. Social Security programs.
