Organizations

Professional organizations keep you up to date with trends in the field. Many also have a local San Diego chapter. Being active in these organizations is an excellent way to make industry connections

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) A national trade association that advocates for construction interests
American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) Provides education, fellowship and opportunities for professional development
Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Provides training, education, news and events as well as offering statistics on construction related fields.
Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) The only US organization dedicated exclusively to construction and project management.
Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Information on building design and the construction industry.
Design Build Institute of America (DBIA) An organization that teaches and promotes best practices in Design Build. Includes industry research and reports and a quarterly newsletter.
Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Offers a variety of online publications related to the engineering fields.
US Green Building Council Their most visible program, the LEED Green Building Rating System, is a voluntary, consensus-based rating system that provides a national standard on what consitutes a green building

Competitions

Competitions are a fantastic way to get experience, network and showcase your talents. Many students at NSAD choose to take part in the Associated Schools of Construction Regions 6 and 7 Reno Competition.

Qualifications

CMIT

The Construction Manager in Training program is the first step towards becoming a Certified Construction Manager (CCM) and is fast becoming a standard in the profession.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration offers 10 and 30 hour construction safety training online and at designated locations.

LEED AP

The US Green Building Council administers LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) examinations. The first step is the LEED Associate Exam, which some students choose to take while completing their studies.

CSI-CDT

The Construction Documents Technologist Exam administered by the Construction Specifications Institute teaches you how a project unfolds from conception to delivery (and allows you to put a few letters after your name!) It is also the pre-requisite to CSI’s advanced certification exams.

Software competencies are crucial in the architecture profession. You can help yourself get ahead by getting credentialed in leading software such as Autodesk Revit.

You may also want to think about taking some of the credentials offered through LinkedIn Learning. NewSchool has institutional access to LinkedIn Learning which allows you to take Certificates of Completion. Check it out.
